Eat s’mores, help pay for wheelchairs

BAR HARBOR — Rotarians will host a s’more celebration at Hadley Point Beach on Friday, Oct. 16, from 6-8 p.m. to help raise $650 for their Belize wheelchair project.

In March 2016, Rotarians from Ellsworth and Bar Harbor will fit wheelchairs to people in Belize. The funds raised do not pay for the Rotarians’ time and efforts, but for the actual wheelchairs. The Bar Harbor club already has raised $3,000 towards its goal.

This is a family-friendly event, and everyone is welcome. The price is $10 per adult and $5 for children under 12. S’mores and other edibles will be offered, and it is a song and share event. To learn how tickets can be purchased in advance, visit “Bar Harbor/MDI Rotary Club” or “S’more for Belize Wheelchairs” on Facebook.

Last year, Rotarians from Mount Desert Island and Ellsworth distributed and fit 110 wheelchairs to the mobility-impaired in Panama. They also carried 400 pounds of donated school supplies to Aporte de la Comunidad Educativa, a school for 70 children in Santiago, and several orphanages. The experience was life-changing for both the Rotarians and some of the recipients.

“The impact one wheelchair can make is humbling,” said Rotarian and Bar Harbor Police Sergeant Shaun Farrar, who helped with last year’s excursion to Panama.
