Police checkpoint snares two

BAR HARBOR — Two drivers are facing charges related to a detail Friday night and early Saturday in which officers were looking for intoxicated drivers.

Seven vehicles were stopped during the five-hour enforcement detail, according to Officer Judson Cake.

As a result, Robert Hardy, 57, of Southwest Harbor was arrested on a charge of operating while under the influence (OUI).

A second driver, 20-year-old Samuel Day of Bar Harbor, was summonsed on a charge of operating without a license due to violating the state’s zero tolerance law regarding alcohol consumption by drivers under the legal drinking age of 21. Day had consumed alcohol but was not considered to be intoxicated, police said.

Police received a late report March 9 of an accident on the Indian Point Road.

Sebastian Moore, no age given, of Bar Harbor reported he lost control of his 2015 Dodge pickup while swerving to avoid a deer. The truck left the road and hit two small trees and a chain-link fence.

No injuries were reported in a March 9 rear-end collision on Route 102 near EBS Building Supplies.

Reyna Perdomo-Ramos, 16, of Hancock reportedly failed to see that a 2014 Subaru, driven by Carolyn Garland, 62, of Bangor, had stopped in traffic. Perdomo-Ramos’ 2008 Chevrolet struck the rear of the Subaru.

Pills found downtown and turned into police March 7 were identified as birth control pills.

Mount Desert

A resident was arrested Saturday after police were called to a home in Seal Harbor.

Holly Smith, 52, of Mount Desert was arrested on a charge of domestic violence assault. She was taken to the Bar Harbor police station and later released on bail. According to police, Smith allegedly assaulted her husband, who sustained minor injuries.

Southwest Harbor

A Massachusetts woman escaped injury Friday when her car went over an embankment at Harbor Ridge condominiums.

Julia Mendros, no age given, of Quincy, Mass., was driving a 2010 Honda, which sustained about $5,000 damage.

The U.S. Coast Guard was notified of an oil slick spotted Friday in the harbor near the Lower Town Dock.

A resident reported March 9 that a GPS was taken from her vehicle sometime during the past two weeks.


Noelle Ellis, 39, of Tremont was southbound Monday morning on the Tremont Road when her 2008 Honda struck a deer in the road.

A resident reported March 7 that a transient might be sleeping in her camper without permission.


A Bar Harbor man was not injured after losing control of his truck March 7 on a snow-covered Route 3.

Chet Gay, 47, was driving a 2003 Dodge pickup which crossed the oncoming lane and left the road.

Vandalism to a vehicle was reported March 8 by the owner.
