Dementia support group starts

BAR HARBOR — A new early stage Alzheimer’s/dementia support group for people with memory loss will be launched by Mount Desert Island Hospital and Birch Bay Retirement Village on Tuesday, Aug. 9. The group will meet at Birch Bay the second Tuesday of each month from 2:30-3:30 p.m.

The group provides facilitated peer support for adults who are capable of understanding their diagnosis. Co-facilitators Peter Sullivan of Birch Bay Retirement Village and Heather Sinclair of MDI Hospital will provide support for group members looking to understand the implications of their diagnosis in their daily lives.

“Individuals diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer’s or similar dementia often have few places to turn for support and education, and this group provides a safe and supportive environment in which to meet others in like situations to share and discuss issues relevant to coping with life changes related to their diagnosis,” said Sullivan.

Topics discussed may include causation, changing roles and relationships, coping strategies, community resources, loss, grief, daily living skills, financial/legal implications and advance planning. Preregistration is encouraged. Contact Susanne Hopkins at Birch Bay Village at 288-8014, ext. 211.
