Cub Scouts off to the races at Pinewood Derby

BAR HARBOR — Cub Scout Pack 89, which includes boys from several Mount Desert Island towns, hosted a Pinewood Derby Sunday afternoon at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Bar Harbor.

Generations of Cub and Boy Scouts have participated in the event, which involves racing model cars carved from wood block kits. Logan Reece was the winner of the time trials. Awards were also given for creative car designs.

Former cubmaster and Tremont resident Mike McKee brought and operated the special aluminum track, which includes a laser timing mechanism accurate to the millisecond, he said.

“The creativity of the kids is always astounding,” he said “It always amazes me to see how these cars start with a simple wooden block with four plastic wheels and four nails. As many as we’ve seen, they always come up with something a little different.”

Kristi Losquadro coordinated the derby.
