County treasurer race result remains uncertain

ELLSWORTH — While the election was held Tuesday, the results of a contested, write-in race for the office of Hancock County treasurer may be weeks away.

The office of treasurer is responsible for handling millions of dollars in public funds.

Current County Treasurer Janice Eldridge is retiring Dec. 31.

No one took out papers to run for the office of treasurer. When a candidate takes out and returns papers, his or her name appears on the official state ballot.

However, the county’s finance coordinator, Pamela J. Linscott, declared herself a write-in candidate for treasurer in September.

A part-time Hancock County Jail corrections officer, Michael W. Boucher of Sorrento, also declared himself a write-in candidate for treasurer.

The names of write-in candidates, even those who have officially declared themselves as such with the Maine Secretary of State’s Office, do not appear on the ballot.

Thus, voters must write the full name of the write-in candidate of their choosing or leave the space blank.

As of press time, the Islander had results on the treasurer’s race from roughly half of the municipalities in Hancock County.

Those results gave a slight lead to Linscott with 224 votes to 204 for Boucher.

Maine Secretary of State’s Office spokeswoman Kristen Muszynski said each town clerk received a form to report election results, including those of the declared write-in candidates.

However, clerks have until Friday of this week to return those to the state, Muszynski said. The Secretary of State’s Office then has 20 days from Friday to verify the reporting and issue final results.

In addition to writing the full name of his or her preferred candidate, voters also needed to color in the circle next to the line where they wrote in the name, the spokeswoman said.

The Hancock County Commissioners held the board’s regular monthly meeting yesterday, Wednesday, Nov. 7. The agenda included an item to discuss the results of the outcome, or lack thereof, for treasurer.
