SOUTHWEST HARBOR — A Massachusetts family is safe after a harrowing incident in the family van.
The Rickard family of Massachusetts had just left a relative’s home on Fernald Point Road in Southwest Harbor on July 6 when they observed smoke coming from the engine compartment of their Toyota Sienna van. They pulled over at the entrance to Echo Lake Beach in Acadia National Park as smoke began to enter the cab.
All inside escaped as flames engulfed the vehicle. A driver on a passing Island Explorer bus attempted to put out the fire with an extinguisher but was unsuccessful. Southwest Fire Department crews extinguished the blaze but the vehicle was a total loss.
