WELLS — A Bar Harbor woman died in a traffic accident on the Maine Turnpike here last Friday after the car she was riding in ran off the road and hit a tree.
According to state police reports, Lynne Richardson, 61, died after the Subaru Forester driven by her partner, John Drollette, 59, grazed the back of a Honda Pilot at about 1:30 p.m. The Subaru went off the road, down an embankment and rolled over. The passenger side then struck a tree.
Both sides of the turnpike were shut down as a LifeFlight helicopter was brought in for Richardson, but she was declared dead at the scene.
Unconfirmed reports said Drolette was transported to Mass General Hospital in Boston for treatment of his injuries.
The accident happened in the southbound lane near mile marker 13. Traffic was backed up around five miles on both sides of the crash site.
Another minor accident occurred in the northbound lane as traffic was clearing.
The accident is still under investigation.
Richardson worked at various places on Mount Desert Island over the years, including the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce, Rainwise and the Jackson Laboratory.
