Market burglars indicted

ELLSWORTH — Two men charged with the May burglary of the Pine Tree Market in Northeast Harbor were indicted Aug. 6 by a Hancock County grand jury.

Matthew Smart, 36, of Tremont and Chad Corser, 32, who police describe as a transient, were each indicted on single counts of burglary Class C, theft Class C, theft Class E, aggravated criminal mischief, criminal mischief and criminal trespass.

Smart and Corser are accused of entering the closed store on May 30 and taking approximately $2,050 cash, and liquor, cigarettes and lottery tickets with a total value of nearly $3,000, according to Mount Desert Police Officer Ken Mitchell, who investigated the burglary.

In addition, the pair allegedly caused more than $5,000 damage to a cash register in order to get access to the money, Mitchell said.

Mount Desert police arrested Smart on the day after the burglary. Corser was summonsed the following week.

Class C crimes are punishable by up to five years in prison and/or a $5,000 fine.

Tyler Murphy, 26, of Bar Harbor was indicted on two counts of theft and two counts of forgery for alleged incidents in December in Bar Harbor, Trenton and Ellsworth. Murphy previously was indicted in April for his alleged role in the burglary of a boat transport business in Trenton, where he and his co-defendants stole, forged and cashed checks belonging to the business.

Also indicted Aug. 6 were Sheldon Alley, 30, Jonesport, aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, two counts criminal forfeiture, three counts unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs; Ronald Brown, 59, Sullivan, aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, unlawful possession of scheduled drugs; Teresa Campbell, 24, Dedham, two counts arson, aggravated criminal mischief, criminal mischief; Edward Cooney, 56, Old Town, stealing drugs, unlawful furnishing of scheduled drugs; Larson Crocker, 37, Lincoln, stealing drugs, unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, receiving stolen property; Scott Firley, 48, Ellsworth, domestic violence assault, domestic violence criminal threatening, obstructing the report of a crime, violation conditions of release, violating a protection order; Howard Frye, 52, Bangor, gross sexual assault, assault; Carlos Garcia, 27, Deer Isle, burglary, theft, violating conditions of release, criminal trespass; Ian Grant, 26, Sullivan, two counts burglary, two counts theft; Roger Grindle, 29, Orland, gross sexual assault, aggravated assault; Dakota Harkins, 25, Southwest Harbor, operating after license revocation, operating an unregistered vehicle; Daniel Legere, 29, Old Town, receiving stolen property; Tamara Strout, 45, Blue Hill, theft; Thomas White, 57, Dedham, two counts aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, two counts aggravated unlawful furnishing of scheduled drugs, three counts unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, two counts illegal possession of hypodermics, two counts criminal forfeiture, violating conditions of release; Chandler Wilson, 38, Bucksport, theft.
