Island Police Log: SUV hits pole, driver charged

BAR HARBOR — A Sedgwick woman was driving a Dodge Caliber SUV on Route 3 near Pirate’s Cove early Jan. 27 when it crossed into the opposite lane, left the roadway and struck a telephone pole, according to reports. Danielle Wescott, 29, and one passenger were not injured. Wescott called 911 to report the crash. Officer Brad O’Neil responded and arrested Wescott on a charge of operating while under the influence of drugs. She was taken to Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth. No drugs were found in the vehicle.

A deer was hit by two different vehicles in quick succession on Route 3 near Sonogee Estates around 11 p.m. Jan. 27, police said. Necal Lia, 21, of Rutledge, Pa., was driving a 2013 Kia sedan north when it struck the deer. The deer apparently was hit again by a 2010 Subaru driven by Jan Murphy, 61, of Mount Desert. No major damage to the vehicles or injuries were reported.

The owner of an unoccupied Rodick Street apartment called police Jan. 28 to report that someone apparently had broken into the dwelling overnight. Nothing was reported stolen, police said. The incident is under investigation.

Shannara Gilman, 38, of Seal Harbor was arrested on a charge of operating while under the influence early Friday morning following a traffic stop on Route 3.

Scott Bagley, 51, of Southwest Harbor was arrested Sunday on Cottage Street on an outstanding warrant. The underlying charge was theft of services, police said. He was unable to make bail and was taken to the Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth.

Police received several reports Monday of scam phone calls from someone claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service.

Southwest Harbor

Police officers from several departments responded Saturday to a report of a woman screaming that she had a gun and was going to kill someone.

Officers found the woman behind St. John the Divine Episcopal Church on Main Street and determined that she did not have a weapon but was suffering from mental health issues. The woman later left with a friend.

The owner of a vehicle with a fake inspection sticker was issued a warning Jan. 28 for the infraction, and the vehicle was taken off the road. The sticker appeared to be a photocopy of an actual inspection sticker, police said.

A resident reported Jan. 27 that prescription medications had been stolen from their home.

Mount Desert

It was a bad weekend for a Northeast Harbor man.

Joey Colon, 27, was summonsed Saturday on a charge of theft of services after he allegedly failed to pay the fare for a taxi ride.

The next day, Sunday, Colon again was issued a summons, this time for reportedly shoplifting a beverage from a Northeast Harbor store.

Four clam diggers were warned Jan. 26 against digging shellfish without the proper permit from the town. The quartet was digging clams on flats along Somes Sound off the Manchester Road.

A large rock had to be removed after falling onto Peabody Drive on Jan. 27. The granite boulder was estimated to be 5 by 4 by 4 feet in size.

Joshua Moore, 31, of Bucksport was eastbound on Route 198 Sunday in a 2002 Chevrolet pickup when the vehicle struck a deer on the road causing about $1,500 damage.


Shawn Arguin, 26, of Southwest Harbor was summonsed Monday on a charge of operating after suspension as the result of a traffic stop.
