Island Police Log: Pesky fires pop up



MOUNT DESERT — Firefighters made short work of extinguishing a small woods fire Monday afternoon in Somesville.

According to Lieutenant Kevin Edgecomb, the fire on Squantum Point Road was caused by the flare-up of a permitted burn conducted the previous day. The Mount Desert Fire Department was assisted by firefighters from Tremont and Southwest Harbor.

In Bar Harbor, discarded smoking materials are suspected as the cause of a small brush fire at Sweet Pea Farm May 14. Firefighters arrived to find a burning brush pile, which they quickly extinguished. The property owner reported that no burning had been done at the location, but that the area was frequently used by employees to smoke.

Firefighters in Bar Harbor responded to Agamont Park twice May 13 to put out smoldering mulch. Discarded smoking materials were suspected as the cause of at least one of the small fires. The area was doused with water.

Vandals last week set fire to a portable toilet at the Seal Cove picnic area in Tremont. The plastic enclosure, valued at $700, was a total loss. State police are investigating.

Mount Desert

A deer running into the side of a pickup May 13 caused $5,000 damage to the vehicle.

Ben Jacobs, 35, of Tremont was driving on Route 198 in Somesville when the deer ran onto the road and struck the driver’s side of his 2014 Dodge.

Southwest Harbor

Judith Webber, 55, of Ellsworth was summonsed Saturday on a speeding charge.

Brittany Carter, 28, of Southwest Harbor was arrested May 13 on nine outstanding arrest warrants.

Bar Harbor

A Connecticut woman escaped injury May 11 when she fell asleep at the wheel while driving. According to reports, Alyssa Coleman, of Simsbury was driving a 2007 Dodge pickup truck on Route 3 when she fell asleep. She awoke as the truck went off the road and overcorrected the steering, sending the vehicle into a ditch, according to reports. The vehicle was significantly damaged in the crash.

Ian Merchant, 34, of Mount Desert was arrested May 14 on a charge of operating while under the influence. A passenger, Jared Holyoke, 34, of Florida, was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear.

A Stony Brook Way resident reported Friday that a water tap in their house had been turned on and left running by a stranger. Police are investigating.

Anthony Vance, 38, of Connecticut was summonsed Friday on a charge of operating without a license.

Officer Dustin Tierney assisted an intoxicated person who had passed out on Kennebec Street Friday.

Arrested Saturday on charges of operating while under the influence were Christopher Brunick, 27, of Lisbon Falls, Christopher Hearn, 48, of Bar Harbor and Zachary Worcester, 28, of Winter Harbor.

Aaron Hilton, 33, of Hancock was summonsed Saturday on a charge of criminal mischief after allegedly breaking a window at a residence after an argument.

Andrew Davis, 23, of Bangor was arrested Sunday on a probation violation after police responded to report of a man passed out on the sidewalk on Main Street.

Police are investigating a report of a purse being stolen out of an unlocked vehicle while the vehicle was parked downtown Sunday.

Officer Larry Fickett shot and killed a sick raccoon on Ledgelawn Avenue on Monday.
