BAR HARBOR — A dog was reportedly struck and killed by a speeding vehicle on Cleftstone Road Sunday. The driver did not stop to try to contact the owner. No description of the vehicle that struck the dog was available, but the dog’s owner called police Monday morning to report the speeding.

Police set up a speed trailer in the area and planned extra patrols.

Anthony Nickerson, 33, of Mount Desert was driving on Route 3 the afternoon of April 7 when his vehicle left the roadway and went into a ditch, according to reports. Lack of sleep was blamed for the accident, police said. The vehicle was considered a total loss.

A resident called police Sunday morning to report having seen a vehicle driving on the “back nine” holes of the golf course. Officer Brad O’Neil responded and found tire tracks on the fairways, according to reports. The incident is under investigation.

A tree was reported knocked down across the Crooked Road in high winds the evening of April 7. Traffic was rerouted when a downed power line blocked the Indian Point Road.

Three teenage boys reportedly climbed up onto the roof of a Main Street business Sunday afternoon. When police arrived, they left the property and were warned not to return.

Officers responded to reports of a truck stuck in the mud flats at Hadley Point the afternoon of April 5. The owner was able to get his truck unstuck without assistance before the return of high water.

Southwest Harbor

Police are investigating the theft of heating oil from a summer home. The caretaker told police Saturday that someone had taken oil from the outdoor tank twice in the past two weeks. Police had no estimate as to how many gallons are missing.

A woman reported Saturday that an egg-shaped piece of granite valued at $20 had been taken from her garden.

Mount Desert

Jeffrey Smith, 67, of Mount Desert was arrested April 6 on charges of operating while under the influence (OUI) and operating without a license. The arrested followed a traffic stop in Somesville by Officer Judson Cake.

Jane Fenno-Vaux, 56, of Mount Desert was driving a 2010 Toyota on Route 198 April 6 when the vehicle struck a deer. The Toyota sustained minor damage.


A 25-year-old resident was arrested April 5 following a probation check at her home.

Aurielle Barnes was arrested on a probation hold and taken to the Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth.

Swans Island

Three people suspected of digging clams illegally fled when approached Monday by Deputy Rob Morang. The Maine Marine Patrol is assisting, and the case is pending, the deputy reported.

A resident reported Monday a kayak washed up on the shore. Morang is attempting to find the owner.
