MOUNT DESERT — What could be worse than being caught with a stolen car? How about being in possession of two stolen cars?
That’s allegedly what happened to a Cambridge man who was arrested Saturday morning near the village of Seal Harbor.
According to Lieutenant Kevin Edgecomb of the Mount Desert Police Department, Martin Pike, 22, was arrested after police found him trying to change a flat tire on a vehicle he allegedly stole Friday in Ellsworth. Parked next to the disabled vehicle was a Chevrolet SUV that Pike allegedly stole Saturday morning from a property in Northeast Harbor.
On-duty officers from Mount Desert were patrolling another part of the town when the Chevrolet, in which the keys had been left, was reported missing around 6 a.m. As a result, Mount Desert asked for mutual aid from Bar Harbor police, Edgecomb said.
Bar Harbor officers found Pike attempting to change the tire on a stolen 1997 Buick. They arrested him on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and operating with a suspended license. He was taken to the Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth, where he remained in custody as of Monday morning.
Lieutenant Harold Page of the Ellsworth Police Department said his department received the report of the Buick being stolen from Storage Plus in Ellsworth just after 4:30 p.m. Friday.
