Two women die in Route 3 crash

TRENTON — Two women died in a crash on Route 3 just before the Ellsworth side of Ellsworth Chainsaw Tuesday morning, according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.

The accident occurred just before 9 a.m.

Police are still trying to determine what happened, according to Chief Deputy Pat Kane.

The women were traveling in a southbound car. The other vehicle involved, a commercial truck, was heading north, the chief said.

Kane said the truck’s operator is being treated at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital.

District Attorney Matt Foster was investigating the crash site, which Foster said is standard procedure for any fatal crashes.

Deputy Jeff McFarland is reconstructing the crash. Maine State Police Trooper Cliff Peterson and others from the state police commercial truck division are on the scene investigating as well.

Police are not yet releasing the names of anyone involved in the accident.

A portion of Route 3, between Beechland Road and Jordan River Road, was closed after the crash and re-opened at 1:44 p.m.

Correction: An earlier version of this article contained an error. It should have stated that a portion of Route 3 between Beechland Road and Jordan River Road was closed.
