Deiters is charged with arson and aggravated criminal mischief. He was taken to the Hancock County Jail, where bail was set at $25,000.

He is expected to make his first court appearance in Ellsworth Friday, according to Stephen McCausland of the Maine State Police.

The fire was confined to Deiters’ first-floor apartment at 113 Highbrook Road Wednesday at about 1 p.m. Fire investigators say newspapers were set on fire in the living room of the apartment. Deiters was seen riding his bicycle away from the building shortly before the fire was discovered, according to police.

The building’s sprinkler system extinguished the blaze before firefighters arrived on scene.

There are 24 other apartments in the building and most are occupied, according to McCausland. No one was injured.

Fire Marshal Investigators Jeremy Damren and Ken MacMaster, along with Sgt. Joel Davis, arrested Dieters. Assisting fire marshals were the Bar Harbor fire and police departments.
