Bar Harbor man arrested on child porn charge

Randal Babiuk

BAR HARBOR – A Bar Harbor man was arrested last week at his place of employment and charged with possession of child pornography.

Randal Babiuk, 46, was arrested Aug. 7 at The Jackson Laboratory on a charge of possessing sexually explicit material of children under the age of 12, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland.

McCausland said state police found hundreds of sexually explicit images of children during an analysis of Babiuk’s personal computer. There is no indication that the lab’s computers were involved.

Officials say during an interview Babiuk said he had two laptop computers, one that he used for work and the other used primarily for watching movies and playing music. Upon further questioning, Babiuk admitted to downloading child pornography, telling detectives that he had been viewing these types of images for some time. He claimed his interest was as “a voyeur,” and that he has never abused a child, the affidavit states.

Babiuk agreed to allow detectives to take his computer for analysis. Detectives later found more than 300 pornographic images of boys between the ages of 5 and 16 as well as numerous movies, some with boys under the age of 12, stored on the computer’s hard drive. Some of the images show adults abusing children.

Following his arrest, Babiuk was taken to the Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth and later released after posting $500 bail. He is scheduled to be in court on Oct. 17.

None of the images are believed to be of children from Maine.
