Community School to hold open house



MOUNT DESERT — The faculty and families of The Community School of Mount Desert Island will hold a winter open house on Saturday, Feb. 10, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The event, held at the schoolhouse at 585 Sound Drive in Somesville, will include tours of the campus, opportunities to view student work and a chance to learn about the school’s place-based philosophy from current students, parents and teachers.

Admission for grades kindergarten through seven for the 2018-19 school year opens on Feb. 15.

“Each year, we look forward to welcoming the greater community to our schoolhouse for this event, sharing how we engage the natural and human communities, landscape and stories of our place into the life of the school, our curriculum and our experience,” said founder and Director Jasmine Smith. “We invite you to become part of our learning community!”

All interested families and community members are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served.

Priority for space and financial aid is given to complete applications received Feb. 15 through March 31. Round two of admissions is open April 1 through May15.

The Community School is a place-based, fully accredited elementary and middle school, cultivating a sense of self, place and community so children may live meaningful lives with deep engagement and stewardship for the community and the world.
