TREMONT – Selectmen approved Monday an agreement between the town and the Maine Department of Transportation that allows heavy trucks and other large construction equipment to exceed weight limits on town roads during the replacement of the Clark Bridge.
Onsite construction is expected to begin in June 2017.
“I don’t really see any exposure [to liability] to the town,” Town Manager Dana Reed said before selectmen voted 5-0 to sign the agreement.
The Clark Bridge crossed the outlet of the Bass Harbor Marsh on the Tremont Road near the Tremont Consolidated School. Transportation department officials have said one-way traffic would be maintained during construction using an automated traffic signal system.
Fabrication of the bridge components is to be done offsite. If onsite construction begins next June, two-way traffic is expected to resume in December 2017, with final paving done the following May.
