Civil discourse workshop

BAR HARBOR — A civil discourse workshop led by Mark Hews will be held at Mount Desert Island High School on Monday, May 6, from 6-8 p.m. Hews is the state coordinator for Maine Revives Civility, a program to help people increase civility and respect by teaching skills to further constructive conversations.

Participants will learn through group exercises what “listening for understanding and to be understood” is, and how to apply it in their daily lives. Through small group dialogues, participants will learn the importance of empathy in civil discourse and how to connect with others who have differing or opposing viewpoints.

This event is co-sponsored by MDI High School’s Engage MDI group, the Jesup Memorial Library, YWCA MDI, the League of Women Voters — Downeast and Indivisible MDI.

Admission is free and open to the public. Donations to offset program costs are welcome.
