Cell tower activated

TOWER OF POWERED UP The AT&T cell phone tower in Otter Creek, disguised as a giant pine tree, was activated Aug. 22, two years after it was approved by the Mount Desert Planning Board.

The tower was erected last winter, and the antennas were installed near the top several months later.

The tower provides cell service not only to the village of Otter Creek, but also to surrounding areas of Acadia National Park, including the nearby Blackwoods Campground. The new AT&T tower on Gatehouse Road, just north of Northeast Harbor, is scheduled for activation early next year.
