MOUNT DESERT — The idea for Special Globe, a new, online travel business for families with special needs members, came to founder Meghann Harris as if from a dream. The Northeast Harbor resident remembers the moment it happened just like it was yesterday.

It was the night of June 5, 2013, and Harris was awoken by a voice repeating just two words: special globe. These words occupied her mind for several hours, and in the morning, she said, she searched online and found nothing. On instinct, she went to a domain hosting website and looked up the name and it was available. So she bought it, for $11.49. That’s when SpecialGlobe.com was born.

Harris has always had a passion for traveling, but has found the process quite complicated since her young daughter, Eliza, was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome. The neurodevelopmenal disorder is characterized by a slowing of development, loss of purposeful use of the hands, problems with walking, seizures, and intellectual disability.

By the time it is fully activated around April 1, Special Globe will include travel information, a forum for parents, access to special needs experts and a way to book flights, hotels and other services directly from the site.
