Swan’s insurance changing hands

BAR HARBOR — The formerly-independent Swan Agency insurance company is now part of the Cross Insurance Agency of Bangor.

Swan Agency president Chris Swan said that Cross executives bought his company in September of this year. Other than the fact that there is a new owner, however, customers should expect no significant changes.

“They are attracted by your success, they don’t want to change your success,” Swan said. “The employees have not changed at all.”

The Swan Agency was founded in 1975 by Cary and June Swan. Chris Swan started working there in 1984 and bought the company from his parents in the late 1980s. He has grown the company to four employees, including himself, over the years, and said that now just seemed like a good time to sell.

His sister, Kim, is owner of Swan Agency, Sotheby’s International Realty which is not part of the deal.

Cross Insurance has purchased more than 100 independent insurance agencies in New England since 1973. Swan will be their first holding on Mount Desert Island. Company executive vice president Jonathan Cross said Tuesday that he is very pleased with the purchase.

As an independent agency, Swan has been limited in the amount of companies they can write policies with. The changeover to Cross will now allow them to select from a much broader base of products, Mr. Swan said.

“Now, we can work with basically and insurance company that does business in the United States,” he said. “So, there is not a client walking through the door that you can’t insure, basically.”

Cross insurance operates out of a main office in Bangor and has satellite offices throughout Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. They are one of the largest agencies in New England, Mr. Cross said.
