Islander wins national honors

ST. CHARLES, Mo. — The Mount Desert Islander won second place for overall general excellence for small weekly newspapers at the National Newspaper Association’s (NNA) Annual Convention on Saturday.

In making the award, the judge wrote: “Good, crisp writing and sharp photos make this a great publication. The feature sections offer great stories and photos. I especially like some of the cut-outs used for photos in the living section.

“The staff should be commended for a terrific Veteran’s Day section … . Overall, nice job of utilizing color throughout the entire publication … . These are the types of stories people come to expect in community newspapers.”

The Islander also won first place for best editorial pages, second place for best original editorial cartoon for one entitled “Mainer Application” by Joe Marshall and third place for local election coverage by the news staff.

The judges wrote, “Clearly provides local coverage for its readers. Good mix of stories. Overall impact/quality causes publication to stand out in competition.”

In the advertising division, the Islander won second place for best multiple advertiser section for its “Delish” summer menu guide and foodie magazine. “Love this section. Great use of color, very creative and eye-catching ads,” the judge wrote. “Now I’m hungry!”

The Islander also won third place for best series ad idea for a campaign of ads produced for Stanley Subaru.

“We are thrilled to receive this national recognition for our work,” said Editor Earl Brechlin. “The awards are really a reflection of the incredible support we are honored to have from readers and advertisers who believe as deeply as we do in the value of weekly newspapers.”

The Islander has won general excellence among Maine weekly newspapers in eight of the last nine years and last fall placed second in the New England Newspaper and Press Association Newspaper of the Year Competition. It has won first place in the NNA contest twice previously and second place three other years.
