BOSTON, Mass. — The Mount Desert Islander won more than two dozen awards for advertising and editorial excellence in the New England Newspaper and Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.
The Islander, which received an honorable mention for general excellence in small weekly papers (under 6,000 circulation), also won first place for editorial pages, editorial cartoon, audience building promotion, business innovation, advertiser promotion, local display ads, niche publication and themed advertiser pages.
The paper and its staff also won editorial awards for arts and entertainment reporting, business and economic reporting, education reporting, right to know, special section editorial, spot news reporting, and general news, sports and scenic photography.

The Islander’s sister paper, The Ellsworth American, won first place for general excellence in the large weekly division, along with 27 other advertising and editorial awards.
