DEP fine for hotel

BAR HARBOR — An employee at the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel and Conference Center incurred a $5,115 civil penalty for the hotel’s owner, the Witham Family Partnership, when he reportedly dumped a five-gallon bucket containing mineral spirits and oil-based paint into a drainage ditch that flows into Frenchman Bay earlier this summer.

Because there was a considerable amount of water flowing through the ditch at the time, a Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) report said, the pollutants “discharged directly into the bay.”

The dumping violated Maine’s Water Pollution Control law and Hazardous Waste, Septage and Solid Waste Management Act, according to the DEP. The Witham Family Partnership also agreed, as part of the enforcement action, to conduct staff training for employees who may come into contact with paint and hazardous waste.
