Bed races, big sales Saturday

BAR HARBOR — Major discounts will greet shoppers in sleepwear Saturday morning as the 21st annual Early Bird Pajama Sale gets underway. The fun-filled morning also includes a P.J. parade, bed races and a chance to save on annual passes to Acadia National Park.

Close to 30 shops will take part in the event this year, with discounts ranging from 10 to 70 percent beginning at 6 a.m. Many businesses will offer those wearing pajamas extra discounts. (See ad on page 5.)

Acadia National Park will sell annual passes at a 50 percent discount at the Islander Explorer hub at the Village Green.

The Jesup library will sell copies of their 2016 Read Around ME calendar outside The First. The calendar features photos of Mount Desert Island residents reading in unusual places. “Anyone who purchases a calendar will receive a voucher for a free book to pick up at the library,” the library’s Kayla Chagnon said.

The sales will be followed at 10 a.m. by a parade on Main Street from the Village Green to Cottage Street, where the seventh annual Bar Harbor Bed Races will begin at the intersection of Cottage and Rodick streets.

Teams from area organizations come up with goofy, speedy contraptions to enter in the action-packed timed race. Teams of five will compete in two heats during the event, with one team member riding the bed and four pushers running alongside. The winning group takes home $500 in Bar Harbor gift checks and the first place trophy. Second place gets $200 in gift checks and a trophy. A prize also will be awarded for the most creative or best-decorated bed.

The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce and Bar Harbor Merchants’ Association organize the Pajama Sales and Bed Races, supported this year by Cape Air and Acadia Shops.
