Boardwalk, other work urged

MOUNT DESERT — Shoring up the boardwalk and retaining wall on Steamboat Wharf Road in Seal Harbor and renovating the public restrooms at Seal Harbor Beach are two of the projects for which Public Works Director Tony Smith wants funding next year.

Other projects on his priority list include renovating the Otter Creek Landing boat ramp, retrofitting the bridge on Brookside Road in Somesville and paving several roads in Northeast Harbor.

Smith has recommended that selectmen ask voters at the May town meeting to approve expenditures of $202,000 for “structural improvements to the Steamboat Wharf Road boardwalk, reconstruction of a portion of the granite wall that supports the boardwalk and … drainage improvements adjacent to the boardwalk.”

Smith also wants $56,000 for improvements to the restroom at the Seal Harbor Beach parking lot. That would be in addition to the $105,000 approved for the project last year.

Smith said work on the 93-year-old brick restroom building would include installing new plumbing, providing electricity to the building and bringing it into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

He also wants $45,000 for improvements to the Otter Creek Landing boat ramp. He said the project would involve “replacing the ledge pieces presently serving as the boat ramp with precast concrete planks and constructing a new bulkhead” adjacent to the ramp.

He is proposing that the town apply to the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry for a grant in the form of precast concrete planks for the ramp.

As for the streets and roads in Northeast Harbor, he said in a memo to Town Manager Durlin Lunt, “We are falling behind in our paving work.”

He is seeking $135,000 in addition to the $320,000 already requested in next year’s budget for roads and bridges. The extra money would be used for paving projects on Manchester Road, South Shore Road, Sinclair Road and a section of Huntington Road.

The board of selectmen will consider Smith’s request to place the articles on the town meeting warrant.
