Bearor named town attorney

bearor, edBAR HARBOR — Town councilors voted 6-0 on Nov. 17 to hire Ed Bearor from Rudman and Winchell as town attorney effective Jan. 1.

Councilors interviewed Bearor in executive session before their Oct. 20 meeting.

The town sent out a request for proposals (RFP) for legal services earlier this fall. A committee including Town Manager Cornell Knight and Councilors Paul Paradis and David Bowden prepared the RFP and discussed the one proposal received, from Rudman Winchell.

The proposal from the firm set a rate for legal services of $175 an hour. The hourly rate of $150 for legal services under the town’s current agreement with the firm of Bernstein Shur had not changed in 15 years.

Current town attorney Lee Bragg of Bernstein Shur plans to partially retire in January. Bar Harbor will continue to use him for bond work and maybe for employment matters, Knight said.
