Award nominations sought

ELLSWORTH — The Gulf of Maine Council is looking for nominees for the 2019 edition of its annual awards program that honors the accomplishments of volunteers, professionals, businesses and organizations for their outstanding efforts to promote a healthy and sustainable Gulf of Maine ecosystem.

The council wants nominees from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Awards will be presented during a special ceremony scheduled for the evening of July 10 in Halifax, N.S. There is an April 5 deadline for nominations.

There are several award categories.

The Visionary Award is given to as many as two individuals, businesses or organizations from each state and province bordering the Gulf of Maine. It recognizes innovation, creativity and commitment to protecting the marine environment. Paid professionals or volunteers are eligible.

The Longard Volunteer Award is presented to one outstanding volunteer who has made significant contributions to conserving or managing resources within the Gulf of Maine.

The Susan Snow-Cotter Leadership Award is presented in memory of the former director of the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Management and longtime friend of the council. It is presented to a coastal management professional who exhibits outstanding leadership or exceptional mentoring in the Gulf of Maine watershed.

The Industry Award recognizes an individual, company or organization involved with tourism, commercial and recreational fisheries, aquaculture, renewable energy generation or water transportation for innovation and leadership in efforts to improve the well-being of the Gulf of Maine ecosystem and the communities that call it home.

The Sustainable Community Award recognizes a community, or a group within a community for exemplary work in achieving sustainability outcomes related to the environment and economy, that are in line with the objectives of the council’s Action Plan.
