Airbnb bill dead

AUGUSTA — Legislation that would have regulated one-night rentals, such as those found on the popular Airbnb website, is dead in the water.

The bill, which was cosponsored by Hancock Representative Richard Malaby, was killed by a senate committee by a unanimous 13-0 vote April 21.

The bill would have required licensing and inspection of one-night rentals in an attempt to level the playing field with traditional lodging properties and eliminate what some see as unfair competition.
