$60K for new fire hoses

MOUNT DESERT — Fire Chief Mike Bender will use about $60,000 from a fire equipment reserve account to replace old and, in some cases, leaky hoses. The Board of Selectmen approved the expenditure Tuesday night.

Bender said he had all of the fire department’s 4-inch-diameter hoses tested last year and that “nearly 20 percent … failed due to multiple leaks.”

He said most of the 4-inch hoses are at least 25 years old.

“Together with age and failure rate … I feel it’s time to replace the entire inventory,” he said.

Bender also plans to replace the department’s 2.5-inch-diameter hoses that have passed their service life, according to Maine Bureau of Labor standards.
