MOUNT DESERT — Voters at a special town meeting next Tuesday, March 8, will be asked to approve the creation of a combined fire/EMS department and to authorize the town to borrow up to $1 million to renovate the Somesville fire station to provide living quarters and workspace for firefighters and EMS personnel.
The meeting will start at 6 p.m. in the Mount Desert Elementary School gym. Everyone must wear a mask, and seating will be spaced to allow for physical distancing.
Voters will be asked to accept the Northeast Harbor Ambulance Service’s offer to give the town’s fire department $135,000 to cover salaries and benefits for fire/EMS personnel who might be hired before the July 1 start of the new fiscal year.
Another warrant article asks if voters want to authorize town officials “to negotiate and enter into an agreement providing for the acquisition of the assets, liabilities and operations of the Northeast Harbor Ambulance Service (by) the town’s fire department.”
Two warrant articles to be voted on at the special town meeting are proposed amendments to the Land Use Zoning Ordinance having to do with lot access standards and permitted uses in the Stream Protection District.
The wording of all the warrant articles, along with explanations, may be accessed on the town’s website.
