Woodworth cartoons on display

BAR HARBOR — The original editorial political cartoons of Robert “Woody” Woodworth will be on display in the Jesup Memorial Library periodicals room throughout November.

The drawings were published in the Portland Press Herald and the Bar Harbor Times from 1992 to 1994 and address topics that are still discussed today, including gender equality, gun control, discrimination and environmental issues.

Woodworth was born in Bar Harbor and attended the University of Maine. After traveling for a few years, he returned to manage the family contracting business, H.A. Woodworth Co., with his brother and raise his two daughters, Caroline and Nell, with Ann Smith. Always interested in politics, he was inspired to take an illustration course from George Danby, the political cartoonist for the Bangor Daily News. Woody was able to pair his drawing skills with his intelligence and quick wit to create his own editorial cartoons.
