Theater holds writing contest ahead of ‘Shrek’ performance

MOUNT DESERT — Acadia Community Theater will perform “Shrek, the Musical” at Mount Desert Island High School April 7-9 and at The Criterion Theatre April 14-15. Leading up to the show, the theater group is holding a writing contest, open to all ages.

“Shrek, the Musical” features an extensive cast of fairy tale creatures, all with unique characteristics that make them special. The show also has the typical content of fairy tales – heroes, villains, challenges, true love’s first kiss and lessons learned. By the end of the musical, the fairy tale creatures have learned to celebrate their uniqueness and, as one song goes, “Let Your Freak Flag Fly!”

Acadia Community Theater’s writing contest is based on this theme of individuality and celebrating what makes us remarkable and distinctive. Entrants are encouraged to write or draw/paint their personal stories in 1,500 words or less, highlighting what makes them interesting and unique.

Winners will be selected from three age categories, kindergarten through fourth grade; fifth through eighth grade; and ninth grade through adult. Winners will be announced at Acadia Community Theater’s Fairy Tale Ball on April 1 at the Neighborhood House and will receive four free tickets for the opening night of the show, as well as an age-appropriate book of fairy tales.

Entries to the writing contest must be emailed or postmarked by Wednesday, March 22. Submissions should include name, age, school grade (if applicable) and phone number. They should be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to Acadia Community Theater, P.O. Box 301, Mount Desert, ME 04660.
