BAR HARBOR — Portraits from the Talented Women of Mount Desert Island series will be on display at the YWCA of MDI through the end of July.
The portraits of 10 different women were created by Pittsburgh-based artists Genevieve E.T. Barbee-Turner when she visited Mount Desert Island in May. The portraits capture “a slice of the everyday extraordinary, said a press release.
“The entire process was completed using the resources available on the island” said Barbee-Turner. “I operated out of the co-working spot Anchorspace and printed from Acadia Frameworks, within blocks of each other. Nicole at Anchorspace was instrumental in introducing me to women on the island to interview and then draw. I wanted to produce pieces illustrating the stories of women who live, work, educate and raise their families on MDI. Many of them are business owners in Bar Harbor, and all had so much wisdom and insightful perspective to share about themselves and the island. The spirit of small business entrepreneurship is inspiring here.”
Each piece is titled after a talent that the model shared in her interview. “Elissa of Bountiful Mirth” brings humor and happiness to everyone she meets, like a bouquet of flowers that overflows with bright blooms. “Kristy and the Turkish Get-Up” illustrates her strength but also highlights her ability to see it and bring it out of others.
The YWCA of Mount Desert Island has the work on display until July 31. Framed 20-by-24 inch single edition prints are available along with postcard packets with all 10 portraits. For every sale, 20 percent of the purchase goes to the YWCA.
The YWCA is open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
