SWAN day celebrates women artists

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — An evening of poetry, song, theater and readings by women artists from Mount Desert Island is planned for Sunday, March 19, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Southwest Harbor Public Library. The event, sponsored by the library and the Barn Arts Collective, supports an international initiative to promote women artists in March.

The artists featured include playwrights Andrea Lepcio and Carolyn Gage, and musician Brittany Parker.

In keeping with the library’s Women’s History Month theme of “creating connections,” this free program is offered in conjunction with SWAN (Support Women Artists Now) Day. SWAN Day is an international holiday on the last Saturday in March, designed to showcase the power and diversity of women’s creativity. It was created by WomenArts, a nonprofit organization for artists and allies working to promote women in the arts. In the last decade, more than 1,500 SWAN Day events have been held in 36 countries.

Visit www.womenarts.org/swan/ for more on SWAN day.
