Summer Chorale rehearsing, seeks members

BAR HARBOR — Rehearsals of the Mount Desert Summer Chorale began on June 29 and will take place at the Mount Desert Island High School choir room on Wednesday and some Sundays through the first week in August at 6:30 p.m.

This summer, the chorale’s concerts honor the Centennial of Acadia National Park. The performances on Aug. 5 and 6 at St. Saviour’s Church will include short works celebrating nature.

The featured work is “Rejoice in the Lamb” by Benjamin Britten. Soloists are graduates of MDI High School: Carolyn Horner, soprano, Rhiannon Vonder Haar, mezzo-soprano, Ethan Craigo, tenor, and Logan MacDonald, baritone. Recitalist Timothy Olsen joins the chorale as organist.

The concert also includes the world premiere of a work by Craig Courtney commissioned by the chorale, as well as music by John Rutter, Joseph Haydn and others.

The Mount Desert Summer Chorale has been giving concerts on the island since 1968. David Schildkret, music director of the chorale, said that all singers are welcome. “There is no audition to join the chorale. We prepare a full program in about six weeks, so people have to come ready to work!” Members of the chorale are both year-round and summer residents, most of whom sing in other choirs during the year. They range in age and work from high school students to professionals and retired people.
