Summer chorale concerts announced

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Summer Chorale will present its annual concerts at St. Saviour’s Church, 41 Mount Desert St., on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 5 and 6, at 7:30 p.m. David Schildkret, the group’s music director, will present preconcert talks each evening at 7 p.m.

This summer, the chorale’s concerts honor the Acadia National Park Centennial. The major work is Benjamin Britten’s “Rejoice in the Lamb.” There also will be short pieces by Haydn, Brahms, John Rutter and others. Featured on the program is the world premiere of a festive hymn, “I Am Bound for the Promised Land,” written for chorale by composer Craig Courtney.

The four soloists are all graduates of Mount Desert Island High School: Carolyn Horner, soprano, Rhiannon Vonder Haar, mezzo-soprano, Ethan Craigo, tenor, and Logan MacDonald, baritone. Recitalist Timothy Olsen joins the chorale as organist, and Clayton W. Smith is the pianist.

“There is a complementary relationship between the park, the surrounding community and the thriving arts scene on Mount Desert Island,” said Schildkret. “None of them would be quite the same without the others. They all contribute to the unique character of this very special place. So it is important that we mark this milestone for our beloved Acadia with a festive concert.”

Members of the Summer Chorale are both year-round and summer residents of Mount Desert Island and the surrounding area. They began rehearsing in early July for this summer’s program, the 46th in the group’s history.

Advance tickets for the concerts are available at Sherman’s Bookstore and at the libraries in Southwest Harbor and Northeast Harbor. Special seating is available for those who make a larger donation to the chorale. Admission at the door is by donation.
