BAR HARBOR — The Bar Harbor Music Festival’s 36th Annual New Composers Concert is set for Friday, July 12, 8 p.m. at the Bar Harbor Congregational Church.
Pianist Margaret Mills will perform a program of works by such present-day greats as Nicholas Scarim, Ramin Amir Arjomand, Richard Wilson, Brian Schober and Gloria Coates.
Mills has performed throughout the US, Europe, and in China and been soloist with the Boston Pops, Fort Myers Symphony, Schenectady Symphony, and the Fairfield Orchestra, given solo recitals in such venues as Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and Wigmore Hall in London.
On Sunday, July 14, 8 p.m. the festival presents a recital of music by Beethoven (the “Waldstein” Sonata), Liszt and all 12 of Chopin’s opus 10 etudes performed by pianist Christopher Johnson. This concert will take place at the Congregational Church in Bar Harbor.
“He let loose with a fury in a ‘no holds barred’ performance,” the New York Concert Review said of a recent performance by Johnson. “After the pyrotechnics of the final movement, the electrified audience leapt to their feet to give Mr. Johnson a well-deserved standing ovation.”
Spanish pianist Antonio Galera Lopez returns for his seventh consecutive Festival solo recital with music by J.S. Bach, Franck, Debussy and Dutilleux on Thursday, July 17, 8 p.m. at the Congregational Church. This is the first of four performances for Galera at this summer’s festival, as he will play chamber music and also perform a piano concerto later in the month.
A prize-winner of several competitions, Galera has performed in major halls and festivals in Spain, receiving outstanding reviews. Recently, he was invited to make his debut recital at the Madrid National Auditorium.
He graduated with honors in piano and flute at the Joaquin Rodrigo Conservatory in Valencia. He later received the Diplome de Concertiste at the ecole Normale de Musique Alfred Cortot in Paris with scholarships granted by la Committee Roussel, Juventudes Musicales de Madrid Award received from Her Majesty Queen Sofia of Spain.
Galera will also give the next Young Audience Concert on Monday, July 15, at 10:30 a.m. at the Northeast Harbor Public Library. This event is free and open to the public. Contact 276-3333.
