Songbird depletion subject of documentary

BAR HARBOR — A free screening of “The Messenger,” a documentary by Su Rynard that investigates the causes of songbird mass depletion and the people who are working to change it, will take place at Reel Pizza Cinerama, 33 Kennebec Place, on Sunday, July 17, at 2 p.m. Reel Pizza offers the screening in partnership with Sierra Club Maine.

“The Messenger” takes viewers on a visually stunning journey revealing how the problems facing birds also pose daunting implications for our planet and ourselves. Rynard’s wide-ranging and contemplative documentary explores our deep-seated connection to birds and warns that the uncertain fate of songbirds might mirror our own. Moving from the northern reaches of the boreal forest to the base of Mount Ararat in Turkey to the streets of New York, “The Messenger” brings viewers face-to-face with a remarkable variety of human-made perils that have devastated thrushes, warblers, orioles, tanagers, grosbeaks and many other airborne music-makers.

The 90-minute film will be introduced by Rich MacDonald, co-owner of The Natural History Center, who studies birds and leads bird and nature tours to all corners of the globe.
