Solstice performance to feature poetry, music

MOUNT DESERT — A performance featuring the poetry of Paul Weiss and the original music of the folk duo Timbered Lake is planned for Friday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. in the Mellon Room of the Northeast Harbor Library.

The two-hour program is called “Lit From Within.” It will honor the winter solstice, which falls at 5:23 p.m. that day.

“Through the interplay of poetry, vocal harmonies, guitar and indigenous percussion, Paul Weiss and Timbered Lake (Diana Ramsdell Newman and Crow Suncloud) enjoy offering engaged listeners a contemplative, unifying experience,” event organizers said. “They have dovetailed their unique strengths and sensibilities to create substantive presentations ranging from solstice celebrations, concerts in honor of the Earth, and tributes to the late poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen.”

Weiss is the author of two published poetry books, “You Hold This” and “Moonlight Leaning on an Old Rail Fence.” He is also the director of the Whole Health Center of Bar Harbor, which is sponsoring the performance.

Diana Ramsdell Newman is a singer-songwriter and guitarist. Crow Suncloud is a poet, singer, and indigenous percussionist. As Timbered Lake, Newman and Suncloud are in the process of completing a double-album CD set entitled “World Undivided.”

A donation of $10 – $15 is suggested but no one will be turned away. A snow date has been set for the following evening, Saturday, Dec. 22 at 7 p.m.
