BAR HARBOR — A building permit has been issued and construction is set to begin May 8 on a permanent concrete skate park at the town athletic fields on Park Street.

The MDI Skatepark Association (MDISA) has been organizing and raising money for the project for more than nine years. Last summer, the group held a groundbreaking ceremony. Preliminary groundwork was completed and allowed to settle for the winter.

Construction is expected to be complete in four weeks. Then, the concrete will cure for several weeks, and a grand opening is planned for July. The skate park will be a free, public space on Park Street in Bar Harbor where all ages may enjoy skateboarding, scootering, in-line skating and biking.

The group continues to fundraise via an engraved brick sponsorship program through May 15. Visit mdisa.org or MDI Skatepark Association on Facebook.
