Sino-American history subject of Pomfret talk

BAR HARBOR —John Pomfret will bring his newest book, “The Beautiful Country and the Middle Kingdom: America and China, 1776 to the Present,” to the Jesup Memorial Library for an author talk and wine reception on Friday, July 28, at 7 p.m.

Drawing on personal letters, diaries, memoirs, government documents and contemporary news reports, Pomfret reconstructs the ways Americans and Chinese have engaged with one another through the centuries.

Pomfret is a journalist who has divided his time between the United States, China, Europe, Africa and the Middle East since the 1980s and worked as a correspondent in China for the Associated Press and The Washington Post in the late 1980s, the late 1990s and the early 2000s.

Pomfret was most recently a Fulbright Senior Scholar in Beijing. He currently lives outside of San Francisco. Visit
