MOUNT DESERT — Artemis Gallery in Northeast Harbor presents an opening reception for a new show Thursday, July 19, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The show features works by Francis Lipari, Deborah Lawrence Schafer, Mary Barnes, Mark Kindschi and Chris Tietjen. The show runs through July 31.
Lipari, a Canadian, depicts his subjects in a setting devoid of clutter, using subtle hues and blends and marking the main feature with realism.
Schafer, who lives in the San Francisco Bay area and spends her summers in Northeast Harbor, has displayed work from California to Maine, drawing inspiration from land and seascapes of the Bay Area, coastal Maine, and coastal Mexico. This show displays how Schafer captures weather and environmental conditions, transforming the coastal Maine landscape and its relationship to time.
Unlike the other artists in the show who focus on landscape, Kindschi brings a more humanising form and style of work.
Barnes is a Maine artist whose roots are grounded in the abstract expressionist school of painting.
Tietjen, the youngest artist in the show, hails from West Philadelphia and expresses his perspective of Maine’s landscape through an engagement with plein-air painting. Creating his own pigments and paints, his process strives to create a truer representation of fluctuating and inconstant variables in pursuit of a genuine representation of Acadia.
Artemis is co-owned by Deirdre Swords and Cody van Heerden.
