BAR HARBOR — Alison Hudson will show her documentary “Close to the Edge: Life in the Khumbu” and lead a discussion at the Jesup Memorial Library on Friday, Aug. 5, at 7 p.m.

The film explores what it means to be a Sherpa and to work on the tallest mountain in the world.

More than 40 percent of the total fatalities on Everest are Nepalese workers, but information about their lives and their opinions about mountaineering aren’t well known outside of Nepal. Hudson’s hope is to bring their stories to a larger Western audience and increase awareness of the conditions on the mountain and the accomplishments of the people who make their living working on Everest.

This talk is part of the Cadillac Mountain Sports Speaker Series at the Jesup. The next talk in the series is on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m. David Rockefeller Jr. will talk about growing up sailing on Mount Desert Island.
