BAR HARBOR — Following a successful opening weekend at Mount Desert Island High School, the Acadia Community Theater production of “Seussical, the Musical” will be performed at The Criterion Theatre on Friday, April 13, at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, April 14, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The show intertwines the stories of several of Dr. Seuss’ books through songs and verse. It is appropriate for all ages and features a wide range of music from salsa to the blues, lullabies and rock.
The cast includes more than 50 adults and children from across MDI, Trenton and Ellsworth. Thomas Van Gorder is the Cat in the Hat. His protégé Jojo is played by Finn Hansbury. Jeffrey Servetas plays Horton. Christina Longstreeth choreographed the show and plays Gertrude McFuzz. Other leads include Danielle Jones-Shepard as Mayzie La Bird, Josh Howie as General Gengus Khan Schimtz, Julie Creed as the Sour Kangaroo, and Ray Vonder Haar and Rose Iuro-Damon as Mr. and Mrs. Mayor from Whoville. Horton is taunted by a large group of Jungle Creatures, including six Wickersham Brothers and six Bird Girls.
The show is directed by Mark Puglisi, MDI High School teacher and ACT board member. Catie Forthofer is the music director, and the set was designed by Doug Van Gorder. Heather Dillon produced the show, and Matt and Angel Hochman are technical director and stage manager. Jaylene Roths led the costuming team of Lori Jordan, Geneva Langley, Joanna Robinson-Clarke and Jacq Bolt. The costumes were designed to reflect the imaginative illustrations of Dr. Seuss.
Tickets cost $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and children ages 2-12. Children under age 2 enter free. Advance tickets for general seating are available at www.acadiacommunitytheater.net. Tickets also will be available at the door. Contact email@example.com.
Circus McGurkus party
In the weekend off between performances, the Seussical cast and other ACT members will present a family dance party and fundraiser at Neighborhood House on Saturday, April 7, from 6-10 p.m.
Party-goers are invited to dress as a circus performer or as their favorite character from Dr. Seuss’ books. Prizes will be awarded for best costume.
From 6-7 p.m., there will be activities for young people, an art show from local students, a costume contest and a sundae bar with ice cream donated by Morton’s Moo.
The funk and classic rock band Clusterfunk will perform from 7-10 p.m. Appetizers and nonalcoholic drinks will be provided, and participants are welcome to bring their own alcoholic beverages.
Tickets for the circus-themed event cost $10 per adult, $20 for a family of four or more, and $5 for seniors, veterans and children aged 12 and under. They will be available at the door.
