Seussical cast to read Dr. Seuss at libraries

BAR HARBOR — Cast members from Acadia Community Theater’s upcoming production of “Seussical, the Musical” will read in costume from Dr. Seuss’ works at area libraries on March 2 and 3 to honor Seuss’ birthday on March 2.

The events coincide with Read Across America Day, a national event organized annually by the National Education Association on Seuss’ birthday to encourage young people to read.

This year, Seussical cast members will read a Seuss story at 1:45 p.m. at the Northeast Harbor Library and 3:30 p.m. at the Southwest Harbor Public Library on Friday, March 2. The celebrations will continue on Saturday, March 3, with story time at the Ellsworth Public Library at 10 a.m. and at the Jesup Library in Bar Harbor at 10:30 a.m. The events will conclude on Saturday evening with a showing of the animated film “Horton Hears a Who!” at The Criterion Theatre in Bar Harbor at 7 p.m.

“Dr. Seuss is beloved by people of all ages,” said Stephanie Clement, a board member of Acadia Community Theater. “The cast and crew of ‘Seussical’ have been working steadily for the last two months on our show. We couldn’t pass up the opportunity to celebrate Dr. Seuss and his wonderful books, and we are so grateful to area libraries and schools for this partnership to bring his books to life on ‘Read Across America Day.’”

“Seussical, the Musical” strings together the stories of several Dr. Seuss books through songs and verse, including “The Cat in the Hat,” “Green Eggs and Ham,” “Horton Hears a Who,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and others.

Acadia Community Theater will perform “Seussical” at Mount Desert Island High School on Friday, March 30, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 31, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The show will be performed at The Criterion Theatre on Friday, April 13, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, April 14, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
