SOUTHWEST HARBOR — A book talk by Laurie Schreiber, author of “Boatbuilding on Mount Desert Island,” will take place at the Southwest Harbor Public Library on Tuesday, July 5, at 5:30 p.m. The talk is presented by the library and the Mount Desert Island Historical Society.
“Boatbuilding on Mount Desert Island” features stunning images of maritime history and documents the island’s rich and diverse history of boatbuilding. Schreiber highlights the histories of some of the major players of the boatbuilding community. Chester Clement was the first to build the “lobster yacht.” Henry Hinckley began his boatbuilding career on an old boat repair wharf. Sim Davis and Bink Sargent built large draggers. The Rich family produced everything from gleaming yachts to rugged workboats.
The book features photographs from the collections of the Southwest Harbor Public Library Digital Archive, Tremont Historical Society, Mount Desert Island Historical Society, the Great Harbor Maritime Museum and private collections.
Books will be available for sale and signing. Light refreshments will be served.
