Ryan to speak on Appalachian Trail

BAR HARBOR — Jeffrey Ryan, author, speaker, photographer, avid hiker and former catalog writer at L.L. Bean, will talk about his book, “Appalachian Odyssey: A 28-Year Hike on America’s Trail,” when he visits Sherman’s Books & Stationery on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 1-3 p.m.

Ryan was born and raised in Maine, where he grew up exploring the inlets and islands off the coast. As an adult, Ryan adopted hiking as his favorite mode of exploration. In 1983, he went on his first long-distance hike, a six-and-half-month adventure on the Pacific Crest Trail. Upon his return to Maine from that trail, Ryan climbed Maine’s highest 50 mountains in one year. In 1985, Ryan’s friend, Wayne Cyr, joined him for a one-day hike on the Appalachian Trail that inadvertently began their 28-year adventure.

In July, Ryan left Portland in his 1985 Volkswagen Vanagon. Ryan’s first stop on his 40-plus-stop book tour was in Washington, where he had book signings at the Thos. Moser Georgetown Showroom and the Smithsonian Institution’s American History Museum.

His tour included signings and speaking engagements at libraries, bookstores and more than 30 L.L. Bean stores from Maine to Colorado.

“I am so excited to be appearing at Sherman’s in Bar Harbor,” said Ryan. “I have spent a lot of time exploring the trails of Acadia in all seasons and enjoy getting to the area every chance I can.”
