Rooks to talk about Mitchell, Clean Air Act

BAR HARBOR — Veteran New England journalist Douglas Rooks, the author of a new biography of Maine’s U.S. Sen. George Mitchell, will speak about the essential role Mitchell played in passing the Clean Air Act of 1990 at the next Human Ecology Forum in the McCormick Lecture Hall on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 4:10 p.m.

Former Maine state legislator Ted Koffman will introduce Rooks. The event is free and open to the public.

A Democrat, Mitchell served as a U.S. senator from Maine from 1980 to 1995 and as senate majority leader from 1989 to 1995. As majority leader, he overcame daunting obstacles to enact the Clean Air Act of 1990.

Rooks is a career journalist who worked at weekly and daily newspapers for 25 years. He was the editor of the Granite State News in Wolfeboro, N.H., editorial page editor for the Kennebec Journal in Augusta and editor and publisher of Maine Times. His debut book is entitled “Statesman: George Mitchell and the Art of the Possible” (Down East Books, 2016).

The Human Ecology Forum is a weekly speaker series based on the work of the academic community, which also draws on artists, poets and political and religious leaders from around the world. Members of the public are invited to attend.
