Professor to lead workshops on government

SOUTHWEST HARBOR Carolyn Ball will lead a four-week workshop on “How Our Government Works” once a week on Tuesday afternoons beginning Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. at the Southwest Harbor Public Library.

Ball is a professor at University of Southern Maine, Muskie School of Public Service.

The sessions will address the power of the presidency, Congress, the judiciary, and lobbying and PACs.

The workshop will address questions such as whether presidents have too much or too little power, why it takes so long to get a bill passed in Congress, the impact of Supreme Court nominations and of the political “donor class.”

Ball won’t take positions on these questions. Instead, she’ll lead participants in an interactive discussion about one area of government in each session and relate the discussion to today’s news.

Call the library at 244-7065 or visit swhplibrary.org.
